Sleep apnea is a serious health condition that affects nearly 10% of men and 6% of women over 40 in the U.S. During sleep, breathing can stop repeatedly due to airway blockage, causing dangerous drops in oxygen levels. Many people with sleep apnea experience numerous breathing pauses throughout the night.
Several dental appliances help ease this condition by gently repositioning the jaw forward. This adjustment keeps the airway open, allowing oxygen to flow smoothly. Patients using these devices often notice a reduction in loud snoring, better sleep quality, and greater comfort at bedtime. These appliances work best for those who are not significantly overweight and are a convenient alternative to CPAP machines.
Request an AppointmentSleep apnea dental appliances come in two types: fixed and adjustable. Below are descriptions of some popular devices:
TAP® 3 (Thornton Adjustable Positioner)
The TAP® 3 is the smallest and most comfortable in the TAP series. Custom-made to fit like a sports mouthguard, it gently moves the lower jaw forward to prevent airway obstruction from the tongue and soft tissue. The adjustable feature allows personalized comfort, accommodating common bite issues while letting the lips close naturally.
OASYS Appliance
The OASYS appliance repositions the jaw to move the tongue base forward, opening the airway and strengthening it. Its upper shield extends toward the nose, enlarging the nasal opening for easier breathing. This adjustable device is patient-friendly and designed for comfort.
Klearway™ Appliance
The Klearway™ device aims to reduce snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. It allows incremental jaw advancements of 0.25mm for optimal comfort. Made from Variflex™ heat-softening acrylic, it becomes pliable under warm water for easy insertion and hardens once in place.
Herbst Telescopic Appliance
Held by clasps and friction grips, the Herbst appliance combines acrylic and adjustable metal wiring. It lets the wearer move their mouth vertically and sideways without dislodging the device. Suitable for mild to moderate sleep apnea, it also effectively reduces loud snoring.
