If you’re dealing with severe tooth sensitivity or have advanced gum disease, a tooth extraction might be necessary. A simple extraction allows our skilled dentist at Huthwaite & Huthwaite DMD, PC to safely remove the affected tooth without needing major surgery.
Request an AppointmentWhy You May Need a Tooth Extraction
There are many reasons a simple extraction can relieve discomfort or prepare you for other dental treatments. Some of the most common reasons include:
- Advanced periodontal disease causing loose teeth
- Extra or retained baby teeth blocking adult teeth
- Orthodontic treatment preparation
- Fractured or abnormally shaped teeth
- Severe decay beyond the help of root canal therapy
What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction
Before the procedure, our dentist will take X-rays to plan the best method of extraction. You’ll receive a local anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel pain. Using a tool called an elevator, the dentist will gently loosen the tooth by detaching ligaments and gum tissue.
Then, forceps are used to rock the tooth back and forth until it can be removed. Sometimes, stubborn teeth may need to be broken into smaller pieces for easier removal.
After the tooth is out, gauze will be placed to help stop bleeding, and you’ll bite down to apply pressure. If needed, stitches may be used to close the socket.
