Digital panoramic dental X-rays

Panoramic X-rays, often called Panorex® or orthopantomograms, capture a comprehensive wraparound image of your face and teeth. These images reveal what’s hidden from plain sight, such as wisdom teeth, early cavities, fractures, and bone loss.

Unlike traditional dental X-rays where film is placed inside your mouth, panoramic X-rays are extraoral. The film is enclosed within a device that gently rotates around your head, making the process quick and comfortable.

Panoramic X-rays aren’t typically taken routinely like bitewing X-rays but are used when needed. They don’t provide close-up details of every tooth but give a broader view of areas like the sinuses, nasal region, and the mandibular nerve.

They’re especially helpful if you’re experiencing severe pain or if we suspect sinus issues might be affecting your dental health.

These versatile X-rays help us to:

  • Work with patients who have a strong gag reflex.
  • Monitor TMJ (temporomandibular joint) conditions.
  • Detect cysts and other abnormalities.
  • Locate impacted teeth.
  • Identify jawbone fractures.
  • Plan treatments like dentures, braces, or implants.
  • Spot gum disease and cavities early.

How are panoramic X-rays taken?

A panoramic X-ray gives an ear-to-ear, two-dimensional picture of your upper and lower jaws. It’s commonly used to check wisdom teeth positioning and to ensure dental implants won’t impact the mandibular nerve, which runs toward your lower lip.

The Panorex machine has a rotating arm with the X-ray source and a moving film holder. Your head is carefully positioned between these parts. As the device rotates, it captures images designed to be as straight-on as possible. Proper positioning is key to getting sharp, clear images that help us catch even the tiniest details. These pictures are enlarged up to 30% for better examination.

Panoramic X-rays are a trusted diagnostic tool and essential for treatment planning. Plus, they expose you to less radiation than many other dental X-ray types.
