Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic, known as CEREC®, has transformed the way dental restorations are done. Where traditional crowns, onlays, inlays, or veneers required multiple dental visits and lengthy waiting periods, CEREC® now enables these ceramic restorations to be completed within a single appointment.
Powered by advanced computer-assisted design (CAD) and milling technology, CEREC® fabricates custom ceramic restorations right in the dental office. This innovation not only shortens treatment time but also offers great advantages for patients who may feel anxious or want to reduce treatment costs.

Many patients needing ceramic restorations find CEREC® to be an excellent option. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with a history of breaking ceramic restorations or those with a deep bite. Typically, CEREC® restorations last over 5 years, with recent studies showing durability beyond 10 years.
Other benefits include:
- No need for temporary crowns or restorations
- Durable, high-quality ceramic materials
- Minimally invasive procedures preserving more natural tooth structure
- Reduced injections and less discomfort
- Fewer visits to the dental office
- Cost-effective treatment solutions
- Long-lasting and biocompatible restorations
What is the CEREC® system comprised of?
The CEREC® system is an integrated CAD-CAM technology, standing for Computer Assisted Design and Computer Assisted Milling. It includes three key components:
- Acquisition device: Equipped with a high-definition camera and medical-grade computer, this device captures detailed 3D images of the prepared tooth, displayed on screen for precise design.
- 3D CAD software: This software lets the dentist view the tooth from every angle, simulating the experience of physically handling and inspecting it.
- Milling device: Using the digital design, this machine carves the restoration from a ceramic block matched to your tooth shade, completing it within minutes.
What does a CEREC® restoration procedure involve?
First, the dentist prepares your tooth for restoration. Then, using one of two imaging options, the tooth is photographed. If using CEREC® Omnicam, multiple images are taken to create a detailed 3D color model. If using CEREC® Bluecam, a contrasting powder is applied before imaging.
These images help design the restoration on screen. Once finalized, the design is sent to the milling device, where the ceramic block is shaped into your custom crown, onlay, inlay, or veneer. The dentist tests the fit and comfort with a dry run, then polishes and cements the restoration securely in place.
